Topic: Reducing Post-Treatment Changes and Orthodontic Retention: Evidence, Facts, Myths and the Future
Post-treatment changes continue to be the commonest risk of orthodontics, but our understanding of how to combat this has improved extensively in the last decade due to an increase in quality research in this field. This includes a number of randomized controlled trials, and in particular quantitative research. This quantitative research is helping clinicians understand patients’ expectations, motivations and decision-making, all of which are key to the commitment needed for long-term retention. Simon will discuss the difference between stability and retainability and how Little’s classic work into relapse is often misunderstood; patients’ understanding and attitudes to relapse, the importance of choosing retention regimes personalized to individual patients and looking into the future at new developments in materials, technology and behavioral science. In addition, he will include some useful clinical tips, hints, tricks and ideas to reduce unwanted post-treatment changes at the end of treatment.
